TMD

Temporomandibular disorder known by the acronyms TMD, TMJD or TMJ is a condition caused when one or more of the temporomandibular joints that connect the lower jaw to the skull and allow the jawbone to rotate and slide become painful or inflamed. The temporomandibular joints affect our eating, chewing, talking and any other activity that involves the movement of our jaws such as singing and yawning. As the joints are located on either side of our heads just in front of the ears jaw related problems such as poor bite, stiffness and locking of the jaw, dizziness, headaches and ear, neck and face pain are all symptoms of TMD/TMJ. TMJ disorder can occur due to a number of factors from general wear and tear on the cartilage to infections and arthritis.

Some of the common causes of TMD/TMJ are:

  • Injuries to the jaw such as dislocations or damage due to impact.
  • Damage to the jaw muscles due to overuse or the grinding of teeth.
  • Infections or tumours in the jaw.
  • Poor alignment of the upper and lower jaws which can be a result of loose or missing teeth.
  • Damaged teeth.
  • Damage to muscle tissue that can cause myofascial pain syndrome.
  • Wear and tear of the cartilage covering the temporomandibular joints.
